Visiting the garden in Buon Ho: Experience in sprouting flowers after the durian tree harvest

Interview Video: F102 – Creating flower buds, triggering simultaneous flowering

Caring for fruit trees after harvest from 8–10 year old orchards in Buôn Hồ and Phước An (Krông Pắc).

In the morning in the land of Buôn Hồ, the VIDAN team visited the garden of Uncle Vinh and Uncle Tường (Village 6, Phước An). Both are skilled farmers with many years of experience. Their orchards have stabilized the canopy for trees over 8 years old and are entering the flower bud nurturing phase after the harvest. This is a time of low income but requires a lot of care: canopy adjustment, root nourishment, and tip locking to help the trees accumulate “sugar”, preparing for flower bud differentiation.

Stabilizing the canopy and creating flower buds

In Phước An – Krông Pắc, Uncle Thịnh’s garden (over 8 years old) is completing the pruning and creating airy canopies model. The goal is to allow 50–60% light to penetrate evenly through the canopy, limiting moisture and fungal diseases. Uncle Nam’s garden (Phước An) has entered the flower bud nurturing phase: maintaining soil moisture, balancing K–Ca–Mg, and supplementing Boron–Zinc at the right time. These measures help the trees stay healthy, with uniform flower buds and fewer pests and diseases.

Post-harvest care process

The orchard owners in Buôn Hồ and Phước An implement the following process to ensure the trees recover quickly and are ready for the flowering season:

Pruning and canopy clearing

  • Create a 3–4 layer canopy, remove diseased branches and crossing branches.

  • Clean the cut wounds and maintain ventilation for even light penetration.

Root recovery and leaf thickening

  • Use decomposed organic matter combined with beneficial microorganisms to improve the soil.

  • Apply moderate nitrogen, balanced with K, Ca, and Mg; additionally supplement B, Zn, Mn.

Tip locking, increasing C/N ratio

  • Reduce nitrogen levels and lightly control water to stop new shoots.

  • Focus nutrition on flower buds instead of shoot growth.

Silk leaves, closing buds

  • When the leaves are uniform and medium-sized, maintain moderate dryness.

  • Supplement with fertilizers rich in P–K, Ca, B, and Zn for round, full, and healthy buds.
